Review

This was my first Iain Maitland novel and I have to say it was extremely well executed. Taking the trope of the long lost son and seemingly turning it on it’s head. I will confess it is a solid 4.5 stars but I have rounded up merely because the half a star was mostly down to my personal choice. I did not gel with the characters. Now I will be the first to say that Maitland’s writing is brilliant and so are his characters. They are believable so it is not that. it’s just the characters themselves I felt no connection to. I think this is actually a good thing. Let me explain. The characters are so believable and true to life that I can safely say these are the kinds of people I would not take to. I really wished Nina would take control, particularly in situations with Gary but it’s not who she is. It just irked me. Thus why I rounded up because I can hardly knock half a point off due to personal preference of characters!

Now I’m sure I’ve confused you all with that let me say the writing is great. Maitland knows how to write a thriller and build it up. The first part of the novel was a little slower than the rest but I think this works. It almost leads you in, makes you think this will be a family drama and not prepare you for the first twist at least not fully. After the first part though it’s one wild ride and I did start to like Nina a little more. I think the main thing that kept me hooked was the relationships, how all the pieces began to click into the place and everything else.

This is one novel that draws you in slowly then grabs you by the collar and won’t let go. I finished this in one sitting because I had to know how it all ended and that epilogue was brilliant. I will definitely be reading more Maitland and would recommend to any thriller fan.
